Background

When I joined the VR company, they had rented a small shop in the bustling innovation hub of Shibuya. The place was too small for VR so  they decided to use it for AR, but lacked a clear idea.

Challenges

Whilst I had experience using AR in various applications, AR technology was entirely new to my career.

Action and Passion

Motivated by passion and self-initiative, I did a lot of research and studies on AR technology and the target users. I proposed an augmented reality interactive cafe concept, outlining customer journeys, shaping the MVP. I simulated my conceptual ideas in videos. My proposal was approved by the CEO, and I subsequently assumed the role of team leader, director and manager for the project.

AR Magical Parfait & Chocolate

In this Augmented Reality (AR) café concept, customers could craft their own AR parfait using a tablet and a coaster whilst awaiting their food. They could enjoy another interactive and enchanting AR experiences with the real parfait.

Created 0 to 1 from conceptualisation to execution, ensuring a seamless fusion of Augmented Reality and culinary delight.

Duration

1 year 5 months

1 Coaster, 2 Tricks

I employed image tracking AR method because it is easy to handle and comparatively accurate with more variations when comparing to other AR methods. The trigger is the coaster.

Concept

With a single AR marker (coaster), customers can enjoy two unique AR experiences:

1. Crafting an AR parfait with only the coaster.

2. Indulging in a separate AR enchantment when the real parfait is placed on the coaster.

This technology is patented.

Why parfait?

Trend alert! I predicted parfaits were to be the next big dessert craze.

Double the delight: Visually stunning and endlessly customisable, perfect for kitchens without a hob.

Premium potential: Unique presentation allows for higher pricing.

All-season champion: Unlike traditional desserts, parfaits work year-round, catering to any season's taste.

Teamed up with a pastry chef to design the flavours and look of these parfaits.

Besides designing, I also created and 2D textures and simple 3D models to enhance the virtual aspects of the experience. Additionally, I played a key role in crafting promotional materials, which significantly contributed to shaping the narrative and generating excitement for the world's first AR Parfait & Chocolate encounter.

Art Direction and Design

My role extended to the virtual realm, where I crafted AR themes and contexts for each parfait, ensuring a harmonious blend of reality and imagination.

I created fantasy concepts for real and virtual that aligned with company's brand.

Simplify the complex user journey

I drew the user flow to develop a clear vision for the touch points of users wireframes.

Users can choose their perference

1. Simply Enjoy the AR experience.

2. Able to take and download photos by creating a temporary account.

I delved into crafting the UI/UX interface, which provided customers with an intuitive and enjoyable means to interact with the AR elements using the shop-provided tablet. This extended to the practicality of enabling customers to capture their AR experiences and download photos via a QR code or email link, eliminating the need to download an app.
